image Three Steps To Creating Plans That Work

Our lives are affected by many changes happening all around us year after year. In order to keep your plan working the way you want and expect it to, we need to view life and estate planning as a process, not as a one-time transaction.

Every estate plan has three stages:

Initial creation of the plan; Implementation of the plan and updating the plan for changes; and Settlement (passing on control in the event of disability or passing on your estate after death.)

What is needed to keep an estate plan current and working the way you want?
  1. The first step is to work with a counseling oriented attorney to create and implement a plan suited to your goals and needs;
  2. The next step is to participate in an updating program to keep the plan current and working the way it should; this updating program should also include education for you and your family members;
  3. Using this process will result in a much better plan with greater security and comfort for you and your family members. Making sure that title to your assets is correct and updated means that your goals will be achieved at a lower overall cost to you and your family.

The fact is that estate plans do not continue to work the way families would like them to unless the plan includes a process for ongoing updating and education.

To implement this three step process of planning in my office, we use an updating program to help assure that clients' documents are current, that they incorporate the latest changes in estate planning law, and that clients and their successors are comfortable with the plan they have designed.

This program is called the LifeTime Planning Program. Specifically, the purposes of this program are to:
  • Keep the assets titled properly so that the plan continues to work properly
  • Make sure your ongoing personal planning goals continue to be addressed
  • Review your assets on a regular basis and adjust your plan accordingly
  • Educate you and your family members about how your plan works and what family members' roles will be; provide education on important issues
  • Amend the plan to make changes you want to make and incorporate legal changes that we may suggest to keep your documents current and meaningful
  • Result: greater security and comfort for your family, plus the added benefit of reducing overall costs.
